INDONESIAN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ PROBLEM IN WRITNG CONTEXT

Abstract

This research deals with Indonesian students’ problem in writing. This research was designed to investigate: (1) the students’ problem in writing (2) the causes of the students’ problem in writing and (3) the teacher’s effort to solve the student’s problem in writing. The subjects of this research were 22 students in the eighth grade and an English teacher of SMP Negeri 2 Rembang, Purbalingga. The data for this research was collected by using document analysis, questionnaire, and interviews. The document analysis was in the form of students’ English writing task about their past experience. From the document analysis, the researcher found problem related to 5 aspect of writing namely content, generic structure, language use and mechanic where the lowest average students score was in generic structure aspect. This means the most problems that faced by students is in developing the generic structure of a writing text. Based on the results from the questionnaire and the interviews, it was found that the nature of writing, lack of motivation, lack of practice, inadequate time were the causes of students experiencing problems in writing continuously. Furthermore, based on interviews with teachers, the efforts made by teachers to deal with these problems were through literacy programs, personal guiding, teacher's feedback, and vocabulary diary.
