Generative AI Policy

Alphamath: Journal of Mathematics Education is committed to upholding the highest standards of research integrity and publication ethics. In accordance with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), we acknowledge the increasing use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in academic research and scholarly communication.

This policy provides clear guidelines for the ethical and responsible use of generative AI technologies (e.g., ChatGPT, Bard, Gemini, Copilot) in all stages of research, writing, reviewing, and publishing within the journal’s focus on mathematics education.

1. Scope of the Policy
This policy applies to all parties involved in the publication process, including:

  1. Authors submitting manuscripts
  2. Reviewers evaluating submissions
  3. Editors managing editorial workflows
It covers any use of generative AI or large language models (LLMs) for:

  1. Research design and data analysis
  2. Literature synthesis
  3. Writing and editing manuscripts
  4. Generating visual, statistical, or numerical content
  5. Peer review and editorial decision-making

2. Acceptable Uses of Generative AI
Generative AI tools may be used in manuscript preparation only as supportive aids. Acceptable uses include, but are not limited to:
  a. Language Assistance

  • Improving grammar, style, and clarity.
  • Translating text for language refinement.
  b. Idea Development and Organization

  • Generating outlines or brainstorming potential research designs.
  • Structuring data presentation without replacing scholarly reasoning.
  c. Formatting and Technical Support
Assisting with citation formatting, reference management, and layout organization.
Note: Regardless of AI use, authors retain full responsibility for the accuracy, validity, and originality of the submitted content.

3. Prohibited Uses of Generative AI
To safeguard the integrity of scholarly communication, the following uses are strictly prohibited:

  1. Data Fabrication or Falsification
Generating non-existent datasets, results, or mathematical models.
  2. Undisclosed Ghostwriting
Using AI to produce substantial portions of manuscripts without acknowledgment.
  3. Plagiarism via AI Output
Submitting AI-generated content without proper attribution.
  4. AI-Generated Peer Reviews
Reviewers must not use AI tools to produce automated or unverified peer-review reports.

4. Disclosure and Transparency
Authors must explicitly disclose any use of generative AI tools during manuscript preparation. Disclosures should be provided in the Acknowledgments or Author Contributions section, specifying:

  1. The AI tool used (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot).
  2. The purpose for which the tool was employed.
Example statement:
“OpenAI’s ChatGPT was used to assist in language editing and manuscript structuring. The authors reviewed and verified all outputs to ensure accuracy and integrity.”

Failure to disclose AI use may lead to manuscript rejection or article retraction.

5. Responsibility and Accountability

  1. Authors are solely responsible for ensuring the accuracy, originality, and ethical compliance of their manuscripts.
  2. Editors will evaluate AI policy compliance during initial screening. Manuscripts containing excessive or unethical AI-generated content will be rejected.
  3. Reviewers must provide evaluations based on scholarly merit and are prohibited from delegating review tasks to AI systems.

6. Compliance and Ethical Oversight
Alphamath enforces strict adherence to this policy. Cases of non-compliance may result in:

  1. Immediate manuscript rejection or withdrawal
  2. Retraction of published articles
  3. Reporting of ethical misconduct to relevant academic or institutional authorities

7. Final Remarks
Alphamath: Journal of Mathematics Education embraces technological innovation while maintaining a commitment to academic rigor, originality, and research integrity. Generative AI tools are intended to support—not replace—the intellectual contributions of researchers.

This policy will be periodically reviewed to ensure alignment with emerging best practices and technological advancements.
